Sunday 26th September 2010, Match Day 1 : Manchester HC vs Deva HC (25-17)

This first game of the season was a test and a preparation game before the European Challenge cup for Manchester HC. The 7 players squad( absence of  Girost, Georgiou, Lasek transferred to Canberra HC, Australia) was playing Deva for the first time in this league.
After a good start from the Yellow and black and some spectacular saves from their Slovakian goalkeeper, MHC was leading 12-3 at half-time.
The second half started with a slower tempo and Manchester simply managed their efforts.
Deva team played few good moves and forced MHC to stay concentrated in defence.
Hammache with 8 goals helped MHC to win the game and showed the teams' potential without few key players. Well played ! Job done MHC! Final score 25-18.

Sunday 17th Oct 2010, Match Day 3 : Manchester HC vs University Of Manchester HC (30-25)

Today, Sunday the 17th of October, Manchester’s squad had to travel to Liverpool Greenbank to play a promising mancunian derby.

The game started on a tempo mainly orchestrated by the university team. The 6-0 defense of the MHC was not articulated enough and left too many 6 meters shots to its goalkeepers. It also had some difficulties to adapt its attack against the high defense that the University players had set up. The ball circulation was too often disrupted by the advanced line player. The first half came with a first red card for Manchester University after a verbal expression toward the referee.

Both teams would have gone to enjoy the break on a parity score if Semir Latouji had not scored this furious goal on the buzz.

Half time MHC 15 – 14 Manchester University

MHC’s performance in second half was a lot more serious both in attack and in defense. The solidarity of the men in defense simplified the keepers’ job. Unfortunately the pace slowed down in the middle of the second half when Manchester University ended up with only one player plus the goalkeeper on the court. This incident occurred after a second direct red card and a succession of fault and contestation.

Then Karim took the wise decision to play the match till the end, refusing the forfeit.

Although the tension of the game was really high, Rudy ¹7 for Manchester University kept his self control and did a nice game scoring an overall of 6 goals.

Both teams left the court with good manners even though we could feel the frustration on Uni’s side.

                           Sunday 24th Oct 2010, Match Day 4 : Manchester HC vs Liverpool Speke HC (28 : 10)

We were looking forward this game top prove ourselves that last year’s lost was an accident. Due to a problem of communication both teams met early morning in the Manchester Sugden sport hall. After as couple of phone calls we learned that we and our supporters, coming from Slovakia and Spain had to travel to Liverpool Greenbank to play this match, kick off 3 o’clock. Consequently, having other commitment elsewhere, two of our players (Karim and Mister Zolt), could not attend this game.

The 7 magnificent left had to team up and become the fantastic 7 to face Liverpool Speke in this important match. Team play and discipline were the key words, vice captain Minas and Commander Karas, were in charge that day. As usual the Slovakian wall was in the goal and thanks to a good night of sleep Jeremy Holden was in a scoring mood. In the first half, the MHC played a collective and disciplined handball and scored most of its goals in fast breaks with its wingers.

After 30 minutes of play the MHC was in charge with the score sheet showing 17 – 6.Minas is leading important warm up

Although having no bench the Mancunian still had their legs and decided to play fast in the second half. Tension rose in the middle of the second half when after a couple of physical challenges Liverpool Speke started being penalised by many 2 minutes and even 2 red cards.
The MHC remained calm, never answered to the provocation and got only one yellow card for the all game. After a little time the match returned to its normal pace and the MHC managed its lead.

             Sunday 7th Nov 2010, Match Day 5 : MHC vs Liverpool Wolves HC   ( 26 : 22 )

Today the 7th of November, the Manchester Handball Club and Liverpool Wolves met in Warrington to play this classic match of the northern league. Manchester’s players had to bear in mind that that day was a special day for them as due to a match cancellation 3 weeks ago, they had to play against Wirral 3 hours later in Manchester‘s hall Bellevue. However the instructions given by the coach and echoed by Minas were clear and simple: “we play at 100%”. In fact after 3 consecutive wins, Karim’s squad could not afford to lose this game that seemed already decisive for the play off race.

Manchester started this game rigorously. The solidarity of the men in defense resulted in a quasi systematic abortion of Liverpool’s attempt to score. On the other side of the ground, Manchester’s halves created gaps between the defenders by moving the ball around and so took many 6 meters shots. The mancunians made the difference during this first 30 minutes, and enjoyed the break with a comfortable lead of 6 goals.

Nevertheless, Liverpool came back from the break with a new defending tactic, to which Manchester had difficulties to adapt its attack. Despite their motivation and success at shooting, Liverpool never achieved to close the gap on the scoreboard and finished the game 4 goals behind, 26 - 22 .

After this important first win, the MHC squad had to hurry and drive straight to Bellevue to get their second victory of the day. This time the battle was won a lot more easily as Wirral did not turn up to the sports hall, thus Manchester automatically benefited from a 10-0 win. This situation pleased most of the players as they did not have to endure a second exhausting game.

              Sunday 14th Nov 2010, Match Day 6 : MHC vs Nottingham University HC  ( 24 : 17 )

Today, Sunday the 14th of November, the two last undefeated teams of the northern league met up in Nottingham. This promising game lived up to expectation. Both sides were determined to get the two points at stake which allowed the winner to take the lead on the table.

The usual fast tempo implemented by these two teams got slowed down, as both defensive formations were solid and experienced. Nottingham started this game with a high 5-1 which perturbed Manchester’s ball circulation. However the Mancunians managed to score by playing between their defensive lines. The MHC defended as a unit, the opacity of their central block obliged Nottingham to take shots on the wings mainly. The outstanding performance of our goalkeeper Zsolt Deak, allowed Karim’s men to enjoy their break with an advantage of 5 goals. ( 11 : 6 )

After the break, Nottingham came back on the pitch with an even higher defensive system (4-2), which encouraged our halves to provoke one on one duels. The ball was released to our winger when the solution could not be found in the center.

After 5 confusing minutes in the middle of the second half, during which one of our player got a red card and two of Nottingham’s players got sent off 2 minutes, the orange and black fought hard to close up the gap that was separating us on the score board. They never succeeded though, finishing the game 7 goals behind.

After this important victory over a tenor of the northern league the Manchester Handball Club is going to keep working hard in order to maintain its position of leader in front of the threatening formation of Salford next weekend.

               Sunday 21.11.2010, Match Day 7 : MHC vs Salford HC  ( 25 : 29 )

The last two unbeaten teams in the north were meeting today...with Manchester playing Salford.

The game started with Salford reciting some exciting handball and going through some good moves to open a Manchester defense which was not performing as efficiently as in their past few matches.

Verdict? Salford were ahead 13-4 after 15 minutes of play...

Manchester took a time out and re-organized, slowly coming back into the game and stopping Salford from every corner of the court, with clinical fast breaks from Georgiou and Hammache...thus levelling to 13-13 with an on the buzz shot from Girost.

The second half started well for Manchester who took a 2 goal lead...Sadly, the Mancunians started to acculumate mistakes with poor ball circulation leading to too many ball losses, poor shots from the wings and almost no initiative from 9m.

In the meantime Salford re-organized and equalized soon before taking a deserved lead of 1-2 goals...taking it to 3-4 goals towards the end of the match.

Well done to Salford for playing a good game both in attack and in defense and taking home 2 points.

Manchester will have to learn from this match and quickly regroup as the objective is still to top the Northern Division 1.

Top scorers for Manchester Georgiou 9 goals Girost 5 and Karas 4.

               Sunday 5.12.2010, Match Day 9 : MHC vs University Of Manchester HC  ( 35 : 20 )

This first weekend of December saw the second Mancunian derby of the year at Sugden sports center. The hard work during the trainings and the return to the basics of handball, allowed us, the Manchester Handball Club, to take the 2 points at stake. It was important for us to do a solid game and enjoy ourselves after the 2 points conceded 2 weeks ago against Salford.

The kick-off, delayed by approximately half an hour, obliged both sides to reduce the time of their warm up. Anyway Karim and his men gave the best of themselves from the very first minute of this match. Our strong defensive central block did not leave many clear opportunities for the University's line player; and the general cohesion and unity pushed the purple and black to find most of their solutions on the wings. In attack, against a high 5-1, we managed to find gaps working the ball around. Also the efficiency of our wingers allowed us to take the lead quite early in this game. After 10 minutes our play maker was taken individually out of the attacking line, which left bigger gaps in the University defensive system.

Wearing our yellow and black kit, we left the pitch at half time leading by 9 goals (19-10).

University came back from the break with a new defensive disposition, taking individually two of our halves, which for the occasion, were reconverted as wingers. This new situation did not disturb Rafal and Minas, who respectively scored 11 and 9 goals. It is also important to comment on our Joker, number 33, Juliano Lasek, who accomplished his seasonal objective one more time (he scored a goal). University's halves were performant in the second half and found the net from 10 meters several times.

For the second time of the season the MHC took over Manchester University in the Mancunian derby; final score 35 - 20.

            Sunday 12.12.2010, Match Day 10 : MHC vs Speke HC   ( 32 : 21 )

Last match of the year 2010 saw two teams from oposite sites of the league table. MHC top and Speke botom line.

The result of this game might have been predictable by looking at the table, but this match did not reflect the gap separating these two teams.
Missing our coach and playmaker Karim Hammache it was for us the opportunity to try to work on specific points. Trying different offensive and diffensive
configuration, we struggled to find our usual tempo. On the other side, with a slower pace, Speke found opportunities that allowed them to keep up with
the score until the middle of the first half. However thanks to our level of fitness we eventullay managed to take a safe lead, and went
for the break with an advantage of 6 goals (15-9).
The second half looked a bit better than the first one with still few inacurracies. We won 32-21 against a coherent team of Speke that showed a nice team spirit.

       Sunday 16.1.2011, Match Day 11 : MHC vs Deva HC    ( 29 : 27 )

For the first game of the year 2011 the MHC was playing Deva HC in Liverpool Greenbank Centre.Manchester came up with only 6 + 1 players to face young and motivated squat of Deva.
The lack of organisation on our site and the numerous mistakes left the space for Deva to take the lead from the first minutes of the game. Their quick ball circulation helped them to find solutions on the wings. 5 goals behind after 15 min Manchester looked like the shadow of itself! Only our goalie Mr. Zsolt in his cage seemed to be up to the task.
However, after a time-out the Mancunian came back timidly on the scoreboard. Half time MHC 10 : 11 Deva.
After the break Manchester looked a bit better, taking lead over Deva in a couple of minutes .Thanks to more organisation in the defence and to Zsolt in the goal Manchester build a difference of 4 goals! But many approximations in the attack gave hope back to the Deva site till last minutes of the match!
Manchester won this messy game 29 : 27. Job is done but we have to get back to the shape before the play off starts!

       Sunday 23.1.2011, Match Day 12 : MHC vs Nottingham HC  19 :18  ( 11 : 7 )

Manchester HC were playing Nottingham HC today for an important match to ensure qualification for the playoffs.

Sadly, with only 8 players available on the day and Rybak injuring himself on his first goal, 4 first team players missing (Girost, Deak, Holden and Tamssom) and training having started just 10 days before...this game was always going to be difficult...

Nottingham took the lead and went all the way to 4-1 up before Manchester reacted and drew level with them.

The team was particularly slow...and apart from Liatouji who stood out with 8 goals on the day and Belus in goals, the rest of the Mancunians played below their normal level and therefore rarely presented a serious threat to a Nottingham team with a goalkeeper particularly on form (7 six metre saves!).

Yet, the mancunians's defense was strong and a few fast breaks allowed them to build a lead of 4 goals at half time. (11-7)

The second half saw Nottingham come back to 1-2 goals for most of the match and with 3 minutes left, the 3 goal advantage was narrowed down to 1 due to two consecutive passive plays blown against Manchester.

The last seconds of the game were tensed but Manchester kept the lead and overall deserved to win this match.

The serious work begins now for Manchester to come back to their good positive attacking handball...

      Sunday 30.1.2011, Match Day 13 : MHC vs Liverpool Wolves  16 : 16

We went to Greenbank to play a match against the newly found Liverpool Wolves. We have turned out to this game with a massive squad of 8 so finally we have had one sub on our bench. We have lined up with our new signing from Cyprus Marios  ! The team were determent to get back on form as the play offs are just a few weeks away. We have started the game average, our defence was doing a great job but we were struggling in attack. Marios have showed straight away the reason we have signed him for and was playing a massive part in organising our attacks. Half time have finished with MHC in the lead with 1 goal. The second half was very similar, we have struggled to score from many attacks and even though we have hardly conceded the match had to finish as a draw. Although the score seems irrelevant for the title we have to learn from our mistakes and press on in full power from now on.

         Sunday 13.2.2011, Match Day 14,  MHC vs Salford HC  18 : 25   (13 : 8 )

Today we were meeting Salford HC in Liverpool Greenbank to determinate who were going to be  Champions of the Northern League.
The MHC entered on the court with a high determination and concentration level. The Mancunian squad took a 3 goals lead after 5 minutes. However, Salford reacted quickly proposing a compact 6-0 defensive line which defeated our strikers. Salford's efficiency at 9 meters was far better than ours and were able to create gaps betwen our defenders. with many missed shots and poor passes we found ourselves behind on the scoreboard after the 10th minute. Salford carried on and enjoyed a 5 goals lead at half time.
During the second half Manchester battled hard to reduce the score difference but never managed to get closer than 3 goals away. Then the failed individual attempts of our players allowed Salford to score few counter attacks and finish the game 7 goals ahead of us .
Salford HC gave a good performance and deserves the Northern League title. Congratulations!

       Sunday 27.2.2011, Play off day 1,  MHC vs Ruislip Eagles HC  24 : 20   ( 14: 10 )

The first day of the play-off games was held this Sunday at Liverpool Greenbank sport-center.

The last confrontation of this most interesting day opposed the southern champion Ruislip to the northern vice-champion Manchester Handball Club.
The Manchester Handball Club, which was recently defeated by the northern champion Salford, gave a good performance. What was Manchester's main weakness two weeks ago, appeared to be a strong point this week. Indeed, with no real ambition for this game, the Mancunian squad proposed a disciplined and performant attacking line. Thus, starting on good basis, the MHC managed to take the lead from the first minutes of the game. Solutions were found collectively, the ball circulation and the players' confidence opened Ruislip defensive line and allowed nice 6 meters shots. From there, Ruislip proposed different defensive systems (5-1, 6-0) however, Manchester managed to adapt its attacking strategy and kept scoring regardless. Also, despite the early injury of the experienced defender Semir Latouji, the Mancunian defensive line was consistent and put Ruislip's striker in difficult shooting position. Not to mention that Mr Deak, finished the job in the goal. Therefore, Karim's men finished the first half with a 4 goals lead (14-10).
Back on the court, the 8 remaining mancunian players kept their seriousness both in attack and defence. However after 10 minutes in the second half, their lack of fitness/substitutes, allowed Ruislip to reduce their deficit on the scoreboard to one goal. Then, with only 10 minutes left to play, the Manchester Handball club did not panic and thanks to its defensive organisation, scored few fast-breaks. At the end of the second half, Ruislip was left 4 lengths behind. This promising victory appears as a bonus to the MHC whose first objective remains to rebuilt a coherent team.

     Saturday 5.3.2011, 1.round of English Cup, MHC vs Oxford University HC    25 : 11   ( 9 : 6 )

For the first round of the English cup, the Manchester Handball Club met Oxford University at the Leyton sports center.

Oxford University took part in the development league this year, and won easily all their matches. Thus Manchester went down in the south not knowing who they were going to play against. The 20 first minutes of the game reflected this uncertainty. The Mancunian were hesitating in attack. The lack of synchronisation between the players and the poor shot efficiency allowed Oxford to stay few goals behind on the scoreboard after 15 minutes of game, and this, despite the outstanding performance of their goalkeeper Mr. Deak, who stopped countless 6 meter shots. However, after a time-out asked by Manchester's coach, things got slightly better. Keeping their defensive solidarity and building more coordinated attacks, Manchester finished the first half three goals ahead (9:6).

After the break Manchester showed a different image of itself. More accurate in attack, the yellow and black dug a gap that Oxford never managed to close. It has to be specified that this advanced on the scoreboard has largely been helped by Mr. Deak who, let only 5 goals in during the second half. Manchester' victory 25-11, allows the team to take part to the next round of the competition, the last 8.

Top scorers : Papamichael , Girost , Hammache all 5 goals.

    Sunday 13.3.2011, Play off day 2, MHC vs Great Dane London HC   15 : 23   ( 9 : 8 )

The Second day of the play-off games was held this Sunday at Moulton sport-centre against Great Dane HC.

Manchester Handball Club, which started with a win on the first day of the play-offs  was defeated by Great Dane HC.
Starting on good basis, with excellent 5-1 defence on the first half, the MHC managed to take a small lead from the first minutes of the game. In the Attack solutions were found collectively, the ball circulation and the players' confidence managed to open Great Danes HC defensive line and allowed nice 6 meters shots finishing the first half with a 1 goal lead (8-9). Although MHC was determined to push Great Dane HC even more in the second half, many mistakes in the ball circulation and lack of concentration in the attack allowed Great Dane HC to make many easy fast breaks and thus take a 3 goal lead in the first 5-10 minutes of second half. The  Great Dane HC maintained their solid defensive line and mancunians failed to recover.

However despite this defeat from last few years champion Great Dane, MHC still in hope for one of three positions guarantee next European Challenge Cup.
